  • SFS WRESTLERS BATTLE HARD AT DEL CITY & KINGFISHER

    December 5, 2015

Santa Fe South High School went to the Del City Invitational this weekend. All of the guys had good matches but just missed out on the medal rounds. Akxel Hidrogo went 4-1 and had a chance to fight back in the consolations for third place but was thwarted by an OSSAA rule which only allows a wrestler to compete in five matches per day. "Akxel was rolling and looked primed to earn a bronze medal," stated Coach Brewster. "It was an unfortunate circumstance, but he got a lot of good mat time in anyway. All the boys did well; it was a good tournament."

The Junior High team went to Kingfisher and ended up placing 7th out of 23 teams and were just a few points out of breaking into the top five. Coach Levonitis stated, "Only one team had more kids in the finals than us, and we only brought six kids who were allowed to earn points for the team. Taking 7th with six point earners is a great accomplishment for these guys." The other eight Saints were either in the middle school division or non-point earning wrestlers in the junior high division.

Placers - Eric Aguilar (1st), Max Diaz (2nd), Josue Meza (2nd), Terri Hartsel (3rd), Moises Ortega (5th), and Jorge Rangel (2nd - Middle School).

  • SAINTS WRESTLERS IMPRESS AT SOUTHMOORE OPEN!

    November 21, 2015

Santa Fe South took 3 high school and 12 junior high school wrestlers to the Southmoore Open to begin their 2015-2016 season. Against tough competition from all classes of schools - Comanche, Harrah, Shawnee, Stillwater, Norman, Moore, Tuttle, etc. - the Saints picked up six medals; Terri Hartsel (1st), Eric Aguilar (2nd), Akxel Hidrogo (3rd), Max Diaz (3rd), Josue Meza (3rd), and Luis Aguilar (4th). Additional grapplers in the top six included Christopher Barron, Daniel Olivas, Oscar Hidrogo, Moises Ortega, and Gina Concha. Other wrestlers who fought hard but ran into some tough bracketing were Ben Brewster, Brian Aguilar, Fabian Seoane, and Allison Smith. "All of the kids battled and worked on techniques we've been covering during practice, and that's really what a coach wants to see", stated Coach Levonitis. "We will continue to work on technique, conditioning, and learning how to train to make it to the next level. The kids are coachable and fun to be around; now, we just need to learn, as a team, the level of dedication it takes in this sport to reach individual and team goals. I expect each wrestler to improve every week and we'll just see where we are at season's end."

The Saints will have their Black & Gold match on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. prior to Thanksgiving Break, and then they will travel to Southeast High School on December 1st to open their 2015-2016 dual season.

  • SFS PATHWAYS MIDDLE COLLEGE DOUBLES ENROLLMENT

    October 9, 2015

Santa Fe South Pathways Middle College enrollment has more than doubled since last year, serving 185 students this year in comparison to 89 students in 2014. This is due to extensive recruiting, said Pathways Middle College Director Christopher McAdoo.

Pathways Middle College is a high school housed on the third floor of the Main Building. McAdoo said it provides students with the opportunity to enroll in college courses while still taking high school classes — known as concurrent for dual credit enrollment — so students can get a high school diploma and associate degree all in one place.

    September 23, 2015

Mr. Seth Stallings, senior agronomist at Santa Fe South Schools, has implemented a hands-on activity for hundreds of Santa Fe South students which will take place this fall at the SFS community garden at 5000 S. Santa Fe Avenue.

According to Mr. Stallings, “This fall every student in the new SFS 6th grade center gets to prepare their own 10 sqft bed for a fall garden. They're removing weeds, adding compost and amendments, choosing and planting seeds. They are responsible for their own bed, which includes everything involved with maintaining it.” Students and staff are excited about the opportunity to grow their very own crops with this innovative urban garden program. Additionally, Mr. Stallings has recruited helpers from the local area to assist students with their work and understanding. “Volunteers from Oklahoma County Jr. Master Gardeners and Master Gardeners are helping on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” he stated.

  • OKC'S CHARTER SCHOOLS HAVE EARNED FUNDING FOR FACILITIES

    July 26, 2015

IN the private sector, success is rewarded and failure is penalized. But in the realm of public education, schools demonstrating the greatest success educating challenging student populations  are often given the least financial support. It’s time for that to change.

When Santa Fe South Charter School was launched in 2001 in south Oklahoma City, classes were held in a church basement. Today, the school continues to use facilities never intended as classrooms. Superintendent Chris Brewster notes one recent addition was previously a dance hall.
